Dr. Lauten grew up in Greensboro. He completed his undergraduate and dental school education at the University of North Carolina, which culminated in a Doctorate of Dental Surgery in 1975. He was in civilian dental practice for 14 years in West End, North Carolina and Baltimore, Maryland between two active duty assignments in the Navy. He rejoined the Navy in 1991 here at Camp Lejeune. He earned his MS in TMD and orofacial pain from the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry in 1998. His past memberships include the American Academy of Orofacial Pain and the American Dental Association, and he is currently a member of the Coastal Carolina Dental Society.
Dr. Lauten retired as Captain from the U.S. Navy Dental Corps after 22 years of active service. He worked as a general dentist for the Second Dental Battalion, Camp Lejeune, for an additional year.
Dr. Lauten and his wife Sylvia have been married for 24 years and they have two children. He is a hospice volunteer and has served five dental missions to Honduras. He enjoys outdoor activities, traveling, and Tar Heel sports.
